Genetic Testing in Newborns Gets a Critical Breakthrough

In an article authored by TIME, in reference to a recent Genome Medicine paper, a breakthrough for NICU newborns is in the spotlight for bringing to the forefront the lifesaving possibilities - and realities - of acquiring genetic information. According to the article, about a third of the NICU population are there for reasons doctors haven't yet been able to identify; genetic testing can help them. Genetic tests for babies in especially strenuous crises can have their genetic information "unlocked" in 26 hours (regular 50 hours). It is with this information that medical staff are armed with increasingly precise insight into newborn health complications - 60% of those tested so far have received a diagnosis, some of them lifesaving.
