What is heart disease?

Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart. The term "heart disease" is often used to refer to "cardiovascular disease,” which generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels (blood clots) that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke.

1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease in the United States each year, making it the leading cause of death.

Why should I know my risk?

You might know if heart disease runs in your family but do you know your genetic risk level? Most people don't. Knowing your unique genetic risk for certain cardiovascular diseases enables you to make changes to lower your overall risk. Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices. If left undetected and untreated, inherited heart conditions can lead to problems such as coronary heart disease, heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest or heart failure.

Won't all cardiac medicines work for me?

It’s impossible to know which medications will work - or which ones could be dangerous for your health - without a DNA test. For example, 40% of cardiac arrhythmia patients are currently on ineffective medications. Medicines prescribed without DNA testing can cause serious side effects, but nearly 20% of these side effects can be identified through genetic testing. Without testing, harmful side effects make up 7% of total hospital admissions, and 20% of readmissions each year.

What medicines are covered by CardiacDX?

The GnomeDX CardiacDX test covers 40 different heart medications including warfarin (Coumadin®), clopidogrel (Plavix®) and statins.
